Illumination Converter
Comprehensive Illumination Converter
Illumination measures the amount of light falling on a surface, expressed in lux. Our Illumination Converter allows you to convert between various illumination units—from the SI standard (lux) to units such as meter-candle, centimeter-candle, foot-candle, flame, phot, and more. This tool is ideal for lighting designers, engineers, and researchers who need accurate measurements for interior lighting, display technology, and architectural design.
What Units Are Covered?
Our converter supports a complete list of illumination units with conversion factors defined relative to candela per square meter [cd/m²] (lux):
Candela/square meter [cd/m²] (lux) – Base unit.
Meter-candle [m*c] – 1 m*c = 1 lux.
Centimeter-candle [cm*c] – 1 cm*c = 10,000 lux.
Foot-candle [ft*c] – 1 ft*c ≈ 10.76391 lux.
Flame – 1 flame ≈ 43.05564 lux.
Phot [ph] – 1 phot = 10,000 lux.
Nox – 1 nox = 0.001 lux.
Candela steradian/sq. meter – 1 = 1 lux.
Lumen/square meter [lm/m²] – 1 = 1 lux.
Lumen/square centimeter – 1 = 10,000 lux.
Lumen/square foot – 1 ≈ 10.76391 lux.
Watt/sq. cm/steradian (at 555 nm) – 1 = 6,830,000 lux.
Nit [nt] – 1 = 1 lux.
Millinit [mnt] – 1 = 0.001 lux.
Lambert [L] – 1 = 3183.09886 lux.
Millilambert [mL] – 1 = 3.18310 lux.
Foot-lambert [fL] – 1 = 3.42626 lux.
Apostilb – 1 = 0.31831 lux.
Blondel – 1 = 0.31831 lux.
Bril – 1 = 3.18310E-8 lux.
Skot – 1 = 0.00031831 lux.
How Does It Work?
The converter uses a two-step process:
Convert to the Base Unit:
The input value is first converted into lux using the conversion factor of the selected “From” unit.Convert to the Target Unit:
The lux value is then converted to your chosen “To” unit using its corresponding conversion factor.
This ensures precise and consistent conversions for all your illumination measurements.
